De Windjager atMadurodam

A journey through time, on the power of the wind

Madurodam’s very first darkride in The Hague is a fact. Commissioned by the park, we worked for nine months on the complete static and dynamic scenery for De Windjager. From leaning facades and moving windmill sails to a central mill that transforms several times: each part contributes to a story that is not told, but that you experience yourself.

A sensory journey through time

The power source of this attraction? The wind. The concept revolves around the role wind energy plays in Dutch history. From saw mills and paint mills to modern wind turbines, De Windjager takes visitors on a sensory journey through time. Redbird Studios built six scenes in the show, six change walls, the entire queue, pre-show, outdoor area and signing. One of the eye-catchers? The central mill in the
heart of the building that changes shape several times during the ride.

Combination of movement, sensation and storytelling

Visitors enter the attraction through a crooked street where crooked trees, sagging houses and crooked lampposts immediately set the tone.
The Wind Hunter is a compact attraction that makes clever use of its limited space: four vehicles travel the same track several times, but pass through changing scenes. Scenes rotate, move and transform. At the outer edge, a giant projection screen enhances the illusion of a larger world. The story of The Wind Hunter is not explicitly told with a voiceover or text. The story is in the images, materials and movement. In the preshow, immense windmill sails provide a flying start. Then visitors put the puzzle pieces together themselves.

Making the invisible visible

Our task? To make the invisible visible. To make the power of the wind tangible in the material, shapes and movement. Each set piece was designed, tested, built and finished in our workshop down to the smallest detail. On Thursday, July 10, 20225, the moment was there and The Wind Hunter officially opened to the public. A unique darkride in which technology, storytelling and set construction come together into one flowing story. We look back on this successful project with great pride.
